The book of ezekiel: outline

Six Small Steps for an Individual - Six Giant Steps for the Human Race - Six Leaps for the Nation of Israel

By Johnny Tatum

The purpose of this general outline of the Book of Ezekiel is to present the apocalyptic history of (1) the nation of Israel, (2) the human race, and (3) every human being.

General Outline of Ezekiel

I.

God is present [at the beginning]

II.

God is rejected

III.

God leaves - in stages [ ultimately leads to destruction]

IV.

Either-Or

Rejection continued

- God stays away forever

God accepted

- God comes back forever

V.

God makes a new creation

VI.

Different levels of enjoyment of God

The different stages of the Ezekiel outline are as follows:

We will see that the six stages are true on three levels in the Ezekiel Allegory, including the history of:

The Nation of Israel

Let us think about the nation of Israel according to this pattern. The stages include the following:

Stage One: God was with the nation of Israel.

Of course, God is the One who founded the nation of Israel through Abraham. Primarily, however, this refers to God [Himself] indwelling the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle and, later on, in the Temple. Any unbeliever (somebody who rejected God and denied God was with the Jews) who stepped into the Holy of Holies would have been atomized, because he had no relationship with the living God. And wherever the Ark of the Covenant went, the Israelites won. There was no question that God was with the nation of Israel.

Stage Two: Israel rejected God, so

Stage Three: God left the nation of Israel.

God is still wherever the Holy of Holies was, but He is there in the sense that God is omnipresent (He is present everywhere). However, God's presence did leave the Holy of Holies in the sense that His powerful, particular manifestation left. In a vision, Ezekiel saw God's Shekinah Glory leave the Holy of Holies/Temple and, therefore, the nation of Israel. However, we are going to see that He left the nation of Israel in stages. Ultimately, according to the pattern given, that leads to destruction.

That is exactly what happened; the Holy of Holies/Temple was totally destroyed. It was destroyed to the point that, just one generation after 70 A.D., nobody knew where the Holy of Holies had been located [specifically]. People would come into Jerusalem and ask, but nobody knew more than a very general area.

Stage Four [an Either-Or proposition]:

Stage Five: For those of the nation of Israel who accepted God, their spirit was regenerated. That is where we have the picture of the dry bones coming to life in Ezekiel, Chapter 37. God made a new creation, but there were…

Stage Six: Different levels of enjoyment of God.

The Human Race

That same pattern is true for the human race. The stages include the following:

Stage One: In the beginning, God was with the human race.

God created man with no evil in his nature, and God was with Adam and Eve in the Garden where He walked and talked with them.

But then…

Stage Two: The human race rejected God.

God said to Adam and Eve In the day you eat of the fruit, you will surely die (Genesis 2:17). And though Adam had the ability to accept God, to choose good, and to not sin, he did oppositely. When Adam chose to sin, he plunged the entire human race into spiritual death.

So…

Stage Three: God left humanity.

Does that not see strange to say? God had intended that everybody was to be born indwelt with Holy Spirit (filled with God). But once they rejected Him, God left the human race in the sense that nobody was to be born filled with Holy Spirit anymore. At this stage, God's Holy Spirit works on every human being, but it is from the outside of the human race.

Then there is…

Stage Four [an Either-Or proposition]:

However, there is going to be

Stage Five: [For the part of the human race that accepts Him] God makes a new creation.

This will occur in the millenium and in all eternity.

But there will always be…

Stage Six: Different levels of enjoyment of God.

Every Human Being

Let us go to the third level of understanding, and that is where we see that the same six patterns are true for every human being. The stages include the following:

Stage One: God is present with every child at the beginning.

Children can respond to spiritual food, have access to God, and are heard by God when they pray because God is in children. At the beginning, children do not have a spirit, though there is a place within each individual for a spirit (just like there is a place for the Temple's Holy of Holies).

Clearly, this is not the same as an adult believer whose spirit is indwelt with Holy Spirit. Instead, children are at the age of innocence, so God indwells their souls (their fundamental level of consciousness). Practically speaking that means yes, they can pray to God and they can even communicate with Him. You can tell children that Messiah Jesus is in them and He will help them, because Messiah does indwell every child's soul, as does Holy Spirit.

That is the way every child begins; he is created in the image of God, and God's presence is with him. The child has already sinned, but he is just not fully aware of what it means to sin. And God does not count sin unless there is the knowledge of the sin. In God's mind, the child is not righteous, but he is innocent.

However, there comes a time for each individual when he does KNOW what is right and wrong. At that point, what do ALL -- 100 percent -- human beings do?

Stage Two: Every human being rejects God.

At a certain age [determined by God], every human being will understand right from wrong because it is inherent (inborn knowledge). No matter what culture an individual (including a Gentile, moralist, Jew, or religious person) is brought up in, he has an original knowledge of God which he rejects and distorts at that age (which I believe is around 18 or 20 years old or maybe even older). And there is not one human being that has ever accepted God at that point.

And then…

Stage Three: God leaves the human being.

He is not inside the individual anymore. However, God goes out in stages.

This can work in so many different ways. When somebody rejects God and He leaves, God does not abandon the unbeliever. God will make sure the redeemed are around him. For example, sometimes He will put the unsaved individual in a family of believers to sanctify him. That is God leaving gradually.

Then there is the Either-Or stage…

Stage Four:

Then…

Stage Five: God makes a new creation.

The Ezekiel picture of God rebuilding the Temple (one of the jewels of the Old Testament) is a picture of an individual's spirit that has been regenerated.

Rebuilding the Temple

Regenerating an Individual's Spirit

There is a place for the Holy of Holies, but it is not there.

There is a place for the spirit, but it is not there.

God's presence is not there; the Shekinah Glory departed the Holy of Holies.

God's presence is not there; an individual is not born filled with Holy Spirit.

The Holy of Holies was so completely destroyed that the Israelites did not know where it was.

The place for the spirit was so eradicated that it is not known where it was.

The God of Israel rebuilds the Temple/Holy of Holies.

God makes the individual a brand new creation with a spirit.

The God of Israel comes back in for all eternity.

Holy Spirit indwells the individual's spirit forever.

And for all regenerated human beings there are…

Stage Six: Different levels of enjoyment of God.

What Is To Come?

That is a general synopsis of the six stages on the three levels. Primarily, we will focus on the third level -- the individual human being -- and on the final stage -- the new creation has different levels of enjoyment of God.

I believe that if a believer wants a deeper awareness of the living God in his life and if he wants the Lord God to be more involved in his life, then there is no better place to go than to the Book of Ezekiel. Let us see why.
